Burris Logistics, a Cecil County employer of 260, last week received a Workforce Leadership award from the Susquehanna Workforce Network at their annual meeting in Havre de Grace.

Burris was selected by the network’s board of directors for its on-site employee training programs, employee recognition programs and its tuition reimbursement program, according to Jim Brady, president of the workforce investment board this year.

“This is a big honor for us,” said Peggy Maher-Daniels, the human resources manager at Burris.

Seventy-five percent of Burris’ 260 employees are residents of Cecil or Harford counties, which is the area the Susquehanna Workforce Network has served with job training and partnerships for the last 26 years.

“We started shipping tomatoes on the Delmarva Peninsula 84 years ago and today we’re the largest refrigerated food distributor in the United States,” Maher-Daniels said.

Today, Burris operates 70 million cubic feet of freezer space and serves customers like BJ’s Wholesale, Acme and
Super G.

“We have a ‘make it happen’ attitude,” said Maher-Daniels who attributed the attitude to the company leader Bob Burris.

Bruce England, the executive director of the network and also a resident of Cecil County, said the leadership award was renamed this year as the “Donald Thomey Leadership Award” in honor of Thomey, a founding member of both the workforce network and Cecil County Chamber of Commerce. He died earlier this year.

“He was a constant advocate of ours for years,” England said.

The Clorox Company was the recipient of the Thomey Leadership Award for Harford County.

The Susquehanna Workforce Network has experienced a 30-percent increase in activity in the last year with certain areas like training getting a 300-percent increase and resume writing getting a boost of 188 percent as the number of unemployed workers grows.

The workforce network operates its Cecil County office on Route 40 between Elkton and North East. They offers customers job listings, labor market information, workshops, career assessment, proficiency testing, employment counseling, training services and special services for veterans, early intervention and dislocated workers.
