Robert Donnan (Bob) Burris
Bob Burris, President and CEO of Burris Logistics, entered heaven on Sunday night, September 19, 2010, at 11:30, at his home here in Milford. Bob was born on Sept. 23, 1944, in Santa Ana, Calif., son of Lillian Marshall Burris and the late John E. Burris.
Bob began working for the family business at the age 12. He willingly passed along his ideas, experience and natural talents as a successful businessman to many aspiring entrepreneurs. A long-time member of the Board of Directors for Bayhealth Medical Centers, he also served on the boards of Conectiv Power, the Federal Reserve in Philadelphia, WBOC television station, the State of Delaware’s Young Life program and the Delmarva Christian High School in Georgetown. Bob was a member of the Bombay Hunting Club where he enjoyed duck and goose hunting. He was also a member of the New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Lewes.
When Bob was diagnosed with cancer in June 2009, the doctors gave him 6 to 12 months to live. But in typical fashion, he passed that goal and then some. The Lord blessed him with many extra days with his family, friends, and co-workers. His departure was quick, just the way Bob had always wanted to go. In one moment he was here; in the next, he was at home with the Lord. For Bob, to be absent in the body was to be present with the Lord. With great passion and sincerity, Bob shared that message of eternal hope in Jesus Christ his Savior with so many people, and now he is enjoying the company of the Lord forever. We’ve lost a great leader and a good friend, but the Lord gained a great soldier.
Bob is survived by his wife of 42 years, Susan Roland Burris; his mother, Lillian Marshall Burris of Milford; a son and daughter-in-law, Donnan R. and Amy Burris of Lewes; two daughters and sons-in-law, Robin and Darren Shelburne of Turnersville, N.J., and Megan S. and Dr. Kahlib Fischer of Lynchburg, Va.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Cathy Burris of Wilmington and Howard and Debbie Burris of Milford; a sister and brother-in-law, Lillian and Bob Hoopman of Kiawah Island, S.C.; and eight grandchildren: Davis, Carter, Maggie and Lewis Burris; Ellie, Madison, and Cierra Shelburne, and Seth Fischer. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the church. Interment was held privately. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to be made to Delmarva Christian High School, 21150 Airport Rd, Georgetown, DE 19947, or to Young Life Delaware, 323 Beech Lane, Middletown, DE 19709.
