Press Release - For Immediate Release
Sussex County Habitat for Humanity Building
in Milford, DE
Issue Date: August 12, 2013
(GEORGETOWN, DE) On Sunday, August 4th, Christ Episcopal Church in Milford hosted a barbecue and concert to support Sussex County Habitat for Humanity (SCHFH) as they begin their newest build on Gilcrest Street in Milford. The build will be made possible as two Milford businesses, Burris Logistics and Brendon T. Warfel Construction, join together in partnership to build a Habitat home.
“We are thrilled to be working together will two incredible Milford businesses,” commented Tom Protack, Director of Community Engagement for SCHFH. “We really want to rally the Milford community around the deLeon family as they begin the process of owning their own home. God willing, we can do this with other companies on a regular basis.”
Abigail deLeon and Ofilia Velasquez will soon begin helping to build their own home in Milford. Each Habitat for Humanity future occupant must meet their minimum sweat equity hours, 250 hours per adult in the household, and participate in programs that teach them how to maintain a family budget while eliminating debt. Abigail and Ofilia are the parents of four children: Leopoldo, age 5; Tito, age 3; Abigail, age 2; and Esteban, age 1. The couple is excited to become partners with SCHFH and were approved by the Habitat Board in November 2012. Abigail works in the construction industry as a plumber and Ofilia is a stay-at-home mom for their four children.
With the help of Brendon T. Warfel and Donnie Burris, groundbreaking of the new home is scheduled for August 20 at 5:00 PM at Gilcrest Stret in Milford. Immediately following the Project Blessing, Grotto’s in Milford is hosting a community pizza night for SCHFH and donating 20% back towards the project. In addition, Grotto’s has contributed as a sponsor to the project and will be providing pizzas for the volunteer build days. Habitat officials hope that the deLeon family will be able to move into the house by the end of this year to celebrate the holidays. With Brendon Warfel volunteering as the house construction leader, both he and Burris will invite people and companies in their networks to give their time and materials to reduce the cost to build this house. The goal is to include as many volunteers from the Milford area, especially churches, to participate in Habitat’s housing ministry.
“Brendon T. Warfel and Burris Logistics are both successful, community minded companies with strong ties to the Milford community,” commented Kevin Gilmore, Executive Director of SCHFH. “They are able and willing to engage their networks in helping a family with housing and building hope and community in the process.”
The build schedule will include donated services of trades people. If it cannot be donated, Habitat will use funds raised for this build to pay for the work that cannot be reasonably done by volunteers. The build schedule will include days designated for Burris and Warfel volunteers and partner family participation. Habitat will provide support and guidance to both partners during the entire build. Seeking to put God’s love into action, Sussex County Habitat for Humanity, brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. If individuals would like to become a part of this upcoming Habitat for Humanity project in Milford, they are encouraged to contact Sussex County Habitat at 302-855-1153 or register to volunteer online at www.sussexcountyhabitat.org.
