Supply Chain All the Way: National Supply Chain Day

The world is connected through the supply chain industry; April 29, National Supply Chain Day, is a day to acknowledge the importance of supply chain logistics and highlight our unique food supply chain business. Of course, we could not MAKE IT HAPPEN without our Team, which is the center of our supply chain world.

OUR HISTORY

Our unique food supply chain history began in 1925 when John W. Burris and his father, Edward, recognized an opportunity to deliver tomatoes from the farms in lower Delaware and Maryland to markets in Philadelphia and freshly baked bread to Acme Markets. Today, we offer end-to-end supply chain solutions, specializing in the precision handling of multiple categories of food goods and related items at virtually all temperatures and points along the supply chain.

We have been grateful enough to add Trinity Logistics, specializing in freight distribution, and Honor Foods, specializing in redistribution into our family. Burris Custom, PRW Plus, Trinity Logistics, and Honor Foods, all under ONEBURRIS Brand, allow us to focus on freight transportation, freight brokerage, redistribution, temperature-controlled storage, direct-to-consumer fulfillment, retail, custom dedicated distribution, our dedicated fleet, logistics technology, procurement, and everything in between.

E-commerceA large increase of our business has been with the e-Commerce market; in order to adapt to this need, Michael Pitcher, Senior Account Executive, stated, “We have embraced more automation in order to help our team members become more efficient in their day-to-day tasks, which has also enabled us to fulfill more orders each day. We have converted spaces that were predominantly used for storage only into fulfillment centers to aid in shipping highly customized orders to our customer’s customer.”

Our e-Commerce numbers over the last year have increased growth almost as much as we had seen the previous five-six years combined. As of right now, we have 14 locations that can support our e-Commerce and other partners’ needs. These dynamic needs do not come without challenges we have to overcome and adapt to though to keep up with the ever-changing world of supply chain logistics.

OUR CHALLENGES

The food supply chain differs from many other supply chains because of the severity of transporting/storing delicate items at the proper temperature(s). Our temperature-controlled warehouses and dedicated fleet allow us to face this challenge head-on to ensureDirect-to-consumer fulfillment quality end-to-end supply chain solutions.

“The most difficult thing in our industry is to ensure that the product remains at the required temperature throughout the entire cold chain. Handling frozen and refrigerated foods adds an element of increased difficulty because it is of the utmost importance to maintain temperature to ensure that when the product is ready to be eaten by all of us, it remains the same quality as when it was packed and is safe for our consumption,” Pitcher said.

Along with the responsibility of handling delicate food items, we face the challenge of keeping a dedicated Team in our below-freezing warehouses. Our Team must work tirelessly to support our partners as a part of our end-to-end supply chain solutions. It is not easy work, but it is gratifying. These supply chain professionals are a crucial aspect of why our communities have access to safe, quality foods, and provisions.
